Dr Kirsten Eddy

Dr Kirsten Eddy is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Digital News at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. She studies the interplay of journalism, politics, and digital media, with a focus on moral and civic media and political discourse.

Before coming to Oxford, Kirsten obtained her PhD in media and communication from the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her dissertation research analyzed and documented the "moralization" of media and political communication. Her work has been published in several leading communication journals, including New Media & Society, Journalism, and Journalism Studies, and she is the co-author of “Power in Ideas” (Cambridge University Press, 2021) and “Recoding the Boys’ Club” (Oxford University Press, 2020). Kirsten draws on a range of methodological approaches, including surveys, computational methods, qualitative and quantitative content analyses, and semi-structured interviews, to understand the role of media discourse in political life.

At UNC, Kirsten was a graduate research fellow with the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life (CITAP) and taught courses in news writing, reporting, and editing. Prior to her doctorate, she worked as an editor at Gallup, as well as in roles in reporting, news editing, and corporate communication. Kirsten received her master’s and bachelor’s degrees in journalism from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School for Journalism and Mass Communication.
