Lameez Omarjee
Lameez Omarjee is News24's climate editor. Having started her career as a business journalist, tracking the impacts of the energy crisis, corruption and the COVID-19 pandemic on South Africa's economy, she developed a keen interest in the country's sustainable development path.
Lameez subsequently completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Development from Stellenbosch University in 2021, which positioned her to lead News24's climate desk.
Her role focuses on building bridges between climate science and the lived realities of South Africans. This involves engaging with scientists to unpack extreme weather events while also following developments on the country's climate policy and making that accessible to News24's audience.
In the past two years she had secured reporting fellowships to amplify Africa's story at the UN's climate summits COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt and COP28 in Dubai, UAE.
Lameez is a Wits University alumna and holds a Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree in Marketing and Management (2013) and a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Journalism and Media Studies (2014).
She is also a member of the Reuters Institute's Oxford Climate Journalism Network and has completed fellowships with the Danish International Development Agency and the US International Visitor Leadership Program.
Her project at the institute will look at how newsrooms can help the public understand and embrace the move to a low-carbon future.
