How the Rohingya escaped: New York Times: an example of visual storytelling highlighted in this research

Emma-Leena Ovaskainen presents her research into how news organisations are developing visual storytelling for mobile phones - via a website she developed to explain her research, demonstrate best practice, and provide a wide range of examples, in the most accessible and visual way.

The study, Visual storytelling on mobile phones, was conducted over 12 months, and is based on extensive interviews with the New York Times, The Guardian, the BBC, the Washington Post, The Times and NBC as well as two digital-born news outlets, Quartz, and The Pudding.

The study examines:

  • audience
  • how success is measured in different newsrooms
  • challenges and best practices of mobile journalism
  • different forms of mobile storytelling
  • mobile storytelling highlights from 2017 - 2018

Emma-Leena Ovaskainen is a visual journalist on Finnish daily newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, and was a Reuters Institute Journalist Fellow in 2017/8,
