Reflections on Case for Public Service Broadcasting in 2028
RISJ Director, David Levy, spoke recently at the BBC’s Broadcasting House, on ‘The Future Case for PSB – Universality in the Face of Fragmentation’. The occasion was an event held jointly between the BBC, Czech Radio, and the European Broadcasting Union entitled “Truth and Power”, marking a hundred years of the Czech Republic. David argued that the hardest challenge Public Service Broadcasters would face in the future would be to achieve universal impact and retain trust in the face of with multiple forms of fragmentation.
He drew on data from the 2018 Reuters Institute Digital News Report, from a recent Pew Research Centre study and from his own experience within public broadcasting. The discussion moderated by Reeta Chakrabati from BBC News involved Jean-Paul Philippot, President of the EBU, Helen Boaden former Director, BBC News and BBC Radio, and Cyril Svoboda, former Foreign Minister, Czech Republic.
