Do you have a confidential news tip on an issue that sheds light on the practice of journalism and the way it’s reshaping the news ecosystem? Do you want to share it with the Reuters Institute? We offer a simple way to get in touch with and provide materials to our reporters. This is not a channel to send feedback, story ideas, pitches or press releases. For more general correspondence we have other channels, which you can check out on our About page.

What makes a good tip?

If you have significant information of public interest, we would like to hear from you. Speculating or having a hunch that something is wrong is not enough. A good news tip should address a clear and understandable issue with real-world consequences.

Be specific. You should be as specific as possible and provide any evidence you have to back up your claims. The more documents, data or other evidence you include to substantiate your tip, the more likely it is that we’ll be able to investigate it. The best tips include evidence of what is happening and an explanation of why this matters.

Is it about journalism? Our mission is to explore the future of journalism worldwide. So we are not interested in tips about other topics. We are especially interested in tips about workplace conditions, the rise of content farms, and unethical uses of artificial intelligence.

Examples of good tips include:

  • Here is evidence that this news company has published articles from fake authors.
  • Here is proof that this private broadcaster is forcing young journalists to work overtime for no extra pay.

We will be reviewing messages regularly, but can’t promise each will receive an individual response. The more evidence you include to substantiate your tip, the more likely it is that we’ll be able to investigate it.
