Wang Yao
Wang Yao, a China News Award winner, has worked for China Youth Daily, based in Beijing, for eight years.
After joining the well-respected Chinese newspaper in 1999, he worked in various capacities there, including as staff reporter and as Deputy Editor of the Business News Department. In 2004, he was appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of Elite Reference (Qingnian Cankao), a weekly newspaper of the China Youth Daily Group, which focused on international news. Now Wang is Senior Reporter and Central Bureau Chief of China Youth Daily.
When he was a reporter,Wang Yao wrote a wide variety of articles, from political to financial news, from international to environment features. These have won many national news prizes, including the China News Award (the highest award for the annual comprehensive news writing in China), and the National Excellent Journalist Honor, for covering SARS in 2003. During his time as the Editor-in-Chief, he led his team to give around 200,000 readers a new way to look at the world.
Prior to being a journalist, he was a civil servant in the Beijing government, where he worked to protect intellectual property. He graduated from Beijing Normal University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1994. In 2004, he received a Master of Law degree from Renmin University of China.
