Paolo Mancini

Paolo Mancini (Foligno, 1948) is Professor at Dipartimento Istituzioni e Società, Facoltà di Scienze Politiche, Università di Perugia. He is Chair of the undergraduate Program in Scienze della Comunicazione (Communication Sciences) and Chair of the Ph.D. program in Teoria e Ricerca Sociale e Politica (Social and Political Theory and Research), both at the Università di Perugia. Mancini's scientific interests are focused on political communication and more generally on the relationship between politics and communication. He has conducted many comparative research looking essentially at US and Europe.Mancini has been several times Visiting Professor at University of California, San Diego and in 1995 he was fellow at the Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, Harvard University. In 2001 Mancini was Fellow at the Erik Brost Institute, University of Dortmund and in 2009 Fellow at St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford. His major publications include: "Videopolitica. Telegiornali in Italia e in USA" (Torino, ERI, 1985), "Come vincere le elezioni" (Bologna, Il Mulino, 1988), "Sussurri e grida dalle Camere" (Milano, Angeli, 1994), "Politics, Media and Modern Democracy" with David Swanson (New York, Praeger, 1996), "Manuale di comunicazione politica" (Bari, Laterza, 1996), "Il sistema fragile" (Carocci, 2000); "Sociologie della comunicazione" (with Alberto Abruzzese) (Laterza, 2008); "Elogio della lottizzazione" (Latreza, 2009). In 2004 with Dan Hallin he published "Comparing Media Systems. Three Models of Media and Politics" (Cambridge, Cambridge University Press). This book won the 2005 Goldsmith Book Award from Harvard University, the 2005 Diamond Anniversary Book Award of the National Communication Association and the 2006 outstanding Book Award of the International Communication Association. The book has been translated into many languages (Italian, Spanish, Polish, Hungarian, Ceck, Korean, etc.) Mancini's articles have appeared in "Theory and Society", "European Journal of Communication", "Communication", "Journal of Communication", "Political Communication" and in a number of collective books in English and Italian. Mancini is a member of the editorial board of many important journals: Political Communication, European Journal of Communication, Press Politics, Journalism Studies. While at the Reuters Institute Mancini is working on a project trying to interpret under a new light the political adventure of Silvio Berlusconi and to place it within the new forms that political participation is undertaking in different parts of the world. At the same time Mancini is working on the Reuters project on "Threats and opportunities to the Business of Journalism and its Role in Democracy".
