María F. Novoa Jaso
María F. Novoa Jaso is a Professor of International Communication, Public Opinion, and Sociology at the University of Navarra, Spain. She holds a BA in Journalism, a Master in Social Science Research, and a Ph.D. in Media Communication from the University of Navarra. Dr. Novoa was a visiting scholar in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cambridge (2022) and St Mary's University, Twickenham, London (2019).
Her research focuses on audience studies, journalistic roles, news values, and social representations in popular culture. Her doctoral thesis addressed the influence of television drama series on the workplace on social and professional expectations about journalistic work. She is an expert in social research methodologies such as focus groups, multimodal discourse analysis (from a socio-semiotic perspective), surveys, content analysis, and in-depth interviews. She is currently a member of the research group "Digital native media in Spain: typologies and audiences" and assistant editor of Communication & Society journal.
Professor Novoa has obtained national recognitions such as the Predoctoral Award from the Dígitos journal (best academic article, University of Valencia, 2017); and the second prize in the ATIC (Spanish Association of Universities with Degrees in Information and Communication) awards for the best Doctoral Thesis.
