Gulmira Amangalieva

Journalist, FreeNews-Volga

Gulmira Amangalieva has worked for seven years as a journalist for Russia’s independent regional press, currently with online media FreeNews-Volga based in Saratov. Prior to that, she was a staff correspondent of the regional newspaper “Gazeta nedeli v Saratove”. She has focused on the issues of poverty, labor working conditions, migration, national minorities, government negligence, and civil rights violations.

In March 2019, she completed an investigative reporting course held by the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and The Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Latvia. Earlier, in June 2018, she trained in the U.S. at the newspaper Arizona Daily Star in Tucson, under the journalist exchange program of the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ). Gulmira also has participated in various professional seminars and exchange programs in Germany, the Czech Republic and Georgia.

Gulmira holds a bachelor's degree in Journalism and a master's degree in Law from Saratov State University, where she was awarded the Oxford Russian Fund scholarship for academic achievements.
