Seven Journalist Fellows from seven countries are joining the Reuters Institute in January 2026

The cohort will take a step back from their newsrooms to explore the future of journalism in our immersive programme
Hilary term 2026 Journalist Fellows

Seven talented journalists from around the world are joining the Reuters Institute's fellowship programme this term. Between them all, they have reported on some of the biggest stories globally in recent years including the war in Ukraine, climate change, online disinformation campaigns, geopolitics, de-industrialisation and much more. 

Our new Journalist Fellows will join those continuing from last term in an immersive programme of seminars, talks and events. They will each complete a personal project that they consider valuable to their newsrooms or the news industry as a whole. Hiroshi Asahina

Journalist, Nikkei

Hiroshi Asahina is a political correspondent with experience in regional bureaus and in social affairs reporting. He focuses on holding political power to account and showing how policies are made, and has many years of experience covering elections. His project will examine how fact-checking can strengthen electoral integrity and public trust in Japan.

Håkon Høydal

Journalist, Verdens Gang

Håkon Høydal is an investigative journalist and author, covering online crime, honour-based violence, and other trauma-related topics as online child abuse. His project will explore how journalists can approach trauma ethically and effectively.

Fermín Koop

Fermin Koop is an environmental and climate journalist from Argentina. He is the Latin America managing editor at Dialogue Earth. He has covered 11 climate COPs on-site and trained reporters on environmental journalism. His project will focus on how to improve storytelling around Latin America’s energy transition, bridging policy, science, and public engagement.

Sofia Lewis is a journalist at ITV Wales, working across both its broadcast and digital output from the Cardiff newsroom. Day-to-day, she works on everything from breaking news coverage, to politics, to investigations, as well as field-producing special programmes. Her project will explore how socioeconomic background shapes who enters journalism and who advances within it — and what this means for the stories told across Wales.

Tai Nalon

He reports on many issues, from hard geopolitics to soft cultural issues, spanning across the length of the Japanese archipelago. Since 2019, he has been editor and host at Suspilne, Ukraine's public broadcaster. His project will examine impartiality in times of war.
