Vacancy: Digital news media research fellow

We're seeking to appoint a researcher to work on a project aimed at analysing media developments in a sample of more than twenty European countries, with a particular emphasis on digital media, news, and politics.The purpose of the project is to develop a better understanding of media developments in these countries, including the interplay between analogue and digital media and the relation between news provision and news consumption. The project output includes both academic publications and publications oriented primarily at media industry professionals, practicing journalists, and policy-maker audiences. The person appointed to this position will primarily be working on analysing how born-digital news media are developing across the countries covered, what kinds of “pure players” are being launched, and how they are performing. The researcher will work closely with RISJ Director David Levy and RISJ Director of Research Rasmus Kleis Nielsen (the principal investigators), Nic Newman (lead author of the RISJ Digital News Report), a team of other Oxford-based researchers, as well as a wider network of outside partners from both the academy and the media industry as part of the larger project. The position is an exceptional chance to work on one of the largest comparative media research projects in the world. The work will primarily be focused on a combination of desk-based research, interviews, and analysis of secondary sources of data (including industry data), some of it in collaboration with others as part of the wider project, which expands our ongoing, annual Reuters Institute Digital News Report (www.digitalnewsreport.org). This post will be based on fixed-term full-time contract terms at the Reuters Institute, 13 Norham Gardens, Oxford, and is available from 1st August or 1st October 2016 (the latest start date) to 31st December 2018. The successful candidate will have a completed doctorate (or evidence of imminent completion) or equivalent experience in a substantive area of political or other social science including journalism/media studies; experience in working with desk-based research, interviews, and secondary sources in analysing digital media and familiarity with the existing literature and work in the field of comparative/international media research.
