Reuters Institute to benefit from new Steering Committee members
Five leading figures from journalism, the news media business, and academia have accepted invitations to join the Reuters Institute’s Steering Committee. The committee is a key component of the institute, providing oversight of our activities, approving strategic planning and fundraising efforts, and assisting in our relationships with departments and core funder the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
The five additional members are:
Wale Adebanwi, Rhodes Professor of Race Relations and Director of the African Studies Centre at the University of Oxford, having also taught at a number of universities around the world, including in Nigeria and the United States. He has worked as a writer and editor for several Nigerian news outlets, and contributed to several others.
Gina Neff, Senior Research Fellow and Associate Professor at the Oxford Internet Institute and the Department of Sociology at the University of Oxford. She studies innovation and how technology and digital transformation impact work. She has contributed to Wired, Slate and The Atlantic.
Kate O'Regan, inaugural Director of the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights in the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford. She was one the first judges of South Africa’s Constitutional Court of South Africa from 1994 to 2009.
Helen Lewis, staff writer at the Atlantic, and the former deputy editor of the New Statesman. She is a regular panellist on the News Quiz, a regular host of the Week in Westminster, and has written for the New York Times, the Guardian, Vogue and Nieman Reports.
Michael Friedenberg, President of Reuters News since 2019, leading the company’s media business and operations. He has a background in advancing digital transformation and driving growth in the media industry. He was previously the global CEO of International Data Group (IDG) Communications.
Director of the Reuters Institute, Rasmus Nielsen, said: "As journalism reinvents itself and adapts to a changing world, it is crucially important that it renews its timeless commitment to seeking truth and reporting it while engaging with a truly diverse range of other voices and ways of thinking. We are proud to welcome five new members to our steering committee, all of whom will make invaluable contributions to this process, and we are grateful for their support for our mission of exploring the future of journalism worldwide."
