Tatu Blomqvist is a visual journalist with Yle, Finland's public broadcaster, working as visual producer and news photography team lead. His work focuses on visual journalism ethics, AI, and spatial storytelling such as photogrammetry. He has worked on stories recognized by SND and shortlisted for an Online Journalism Award.
Tatu began his career as a photojournalist for newspapers and magazines, and has also worked in the humanitarian field, reporting from conflict and disaster contexts. He has taught photojournalism courses in universities in Finland, Tanzania and Namibia. Most of all, Tatu likes to go hiking with his family.
His fellowship project, Beyond Fake or Not, examines how AI embedded in camera systems is altering images, what this means for trust in visual journalism and for visual investigative journalism, and how newsrooms should bring their understanding of photography up to date. Tatu's fellowship is generously supported by the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation.
