Monika Bednarek

Monika Bednarek, PhD, is Senior Lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Sydney, Australia and an Affiliate in the Department of Media and Communications at the same university.She is also currently an Associate Member in the Faculty of English at the University of Oxford, UK. She is book reviews editor for the international journal Discourse & Communication (Sage). Monika is the author of Evaluation in Media Discourse (Continuum, 2006), Emotion Talk Across Corpora (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008), and The Language of Fictional Television (Continuum, 2010). She has also co-edited two books and was guest editor for a special issue of the international journal Functions of Language. Other publications include numerous journal articles and book chapters. Her current work focuses on language use in the mass media, in particular in contemporary journalism (print and online). In recent years she has collaborated closely with Dr Helen Caple from the University of New South Wales in exploring how images and words work together to create meaning. To date this joint research has resulted in a book (News Discourse, 2012, Bloomsbury) and three co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles. At the Reuters Institute they are continuing their research in this area, with a focus on the discursive construction of news values.
