American political journalism—rich or poor?

The veteran Financial Times columnist Jurek Martin has written a comment about "The Rising Poverty of American Political Journalism".RISJ Research Fellow Rasmus Kleis Nielsen draws on his recently published book Political Journalism in Transition and argues in a piece written for the Huffington Post that Martin sees the problems upside down - American political journalism is, in Nielsen's view, abundantly rich, and its main problem is not poor quality (though some content is of poor quality) but the risk of a growing gulf between the minority of insiders who can follow the abundant, detailed, blow-by-blow coverage and the majority of ordinary citizens who tune out when they feel journalists no longer report on the problems they confront, speak in terms they understand.
