UK Journalists in the 2020s: Launch event of our new report at City St George's, University of London
On Wednesday 23 April the Reuters Institute will publish a new report examining who contemporary UK journalists are, how they work and what they think. The report is based on a large, representative survey of UK journalists. Authors include Prof Neil Thurman and Sina Thäsler-Kordonouri of LMU Munich; Dr Richard Fletcher and Dr Craig Robertson of the Reuters Institute; Dr Imke Henkel of the University of Leeds; Dr François Nel of the University of Central Lancashire; Dr Jingrong Tong of the University of Sheffield; and City St George's Journalism's Dr Rana Arafat, Dr Lindsey Blumell, Dr Glenda Cooper, Dr Lea Hellmueller, Dr Ayala Panievsky and Prof Jane Singer.
On Monday 28 April we'll present the report at a launch event where journalists and academics will discuss a range of issues raised by this new piece of research: a shift away from permanent contract, the growth in the number of freelancers, lingering inequalities in pay and seniority, ongoing technological changes, and shifting conceptions of roles, ethics, and risks and threats to journalists in the UK.
Panelists include:
- Robyn Vinter, North of England correspondent at the Guardian
- Mitali Mukherjee, Director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism
- Kira Richards, travel and food journalist, including for the Financial Times and National Geographic Traveller
Attendance at City St George's events is subject to the university's terms and conditions.
On Thursday 1 May our colleagues at the University of Leeds will host a regional launch for the report. The event will feature a short presentation of the findings by Dr Imke Henkel, co-editor and co-author of the report, and a panel discussion with eminent local journalists and experts:
- John Baron, Editor and co-founder of West Leeds Dispatch
- Susie Beever, journalist, writer, reporter
- Sunita Bhatti, Head of Regions, Channel 4 News
- Theodora Fairley, Senior News Editor, BBC Yorkshire
- Sarah Lester, Editor of Manchester Evening News
- Jacob Tomlinson, BBC Local Digital Lead for Bradford 2025
Professor Julie Firmstone, who has researched and published extensively on local journalism, will chair the panel discussion.
