The future of Europe’s journalism?

10 May 2011

Europe's print media are adapting to tough economic conditions and developing new business models to survive, writes David Levy in E!Sharp. In recent years, there has been much talk of a crisis in journalism. Newspapers, operating in print, online, and increasingly on mobile platforms, remain central providers of news in most countries, collectively employ more journalists and generally set the agenda more than broadcasters and new media ventures. But in recent years, newspaper circulation, revenue, and increasingly newsroom jobs have declined across much of the EU—even as access to and use of news have increased. Many worry that what we see today is a crisis in journalism, perhaps even a terminal one with consequent risks for the effective coverage of public affairs both at national and European level.
