Sport and politics have often intertwined throughout history. Recently, Russia has come under scrutiny for how its athletes, sporting bodies and politicians have conducted themselves in the international sporting arena. In this Journalist Fellow paper, Alexandra Vladimirova examines how Russia - through the Soviet-era until the present day - has used sport to elevate and position itself on the world stage. Alexandra looks at how some elements of Russian sports media have become complicit in this process.
