Our annual report is published at a time when the world faces profound climate, economic, technological and security challenges, all of which have a bearing on how journalism is produced and consumed. In the annual report you can see how the past year's activities at the Reuters Institute have aimed to engage with such challenges and to understand journalism's role in rising to them, be it through our research, leadership programmes, climate network, fellowships and original news articles.

The central role journalism can play in helping people understand and respond to the defining issues of our time – climate, conflict, inequality, injustice, the impact of technological change, and much more – and the concerted efforts of powerful, self-interested actors to muzzle independent reporting across the globe both underline the continued importance of journalism, and thus of exploring the future of journalism worldwide, working with journalists, editors, and media executives too as they face the opportunities and challenges ahead.
