Applications closing for professional development programme: Future Leaders in News

Future Leaders in News seminar

Applications for the Reuters Institute’s new Future Leaders in News programme close on 12 November and the Institute is looking forward to welcoming the first group of participants. The focused course is one of the very few professional development courses in the UK aimed directly at new or aspiring media leaders.

The course consists of one day of invigorating presentations and discussions, designed to give participants the knowledge, skills and inspiration to become confident and effective newsroom leaders as they begin the next stage of their career.

Course sessions will be led by Reuters Institute Director Rasmus Kleis Nielsen; Director of Leadership Programmes Alexandra Borchardt; and Visiting Fellow Anita Zielina. Together they bring a wide range of leadership experience from newsrooms across Europe. They will share both timeless advice and the latest research to enable participants to gain audience insights, lead a high-performing team and introduce and manage change in their organisation.

Alexandra Borchardt believes the course will leave participants ready to address the challenges their new role presents: “Leading people and driving change can be exciting and rewarding, but there are moments when enthusiasm meets reality. This is when the support network kicks in. Knowing who to turn to, and what kind of resources and techniques to draw on is decisive for anyone in a leadership role, particularly when they are new to it. Our new Future Leaders in News programme will help participants build this support network. It will provide the next generation of news leaders with a tool box they can use when doing their job: Keeping up enthusiasm, drive and focus while managing conflict and building trust in their organisations.”

Attendees will have opportunities to share experiences and network with other participants. The course takes place at the Reuters Institute at the University of Oxford, and begins with a reception and dinner at an Oxford University college.

Future Leaders in News takes place on 29 and 30 November, 2018. The application deadline is 12 November.
