The Challenges Facing Independent Newspapers in Sub-Saharan Africa

Ms Gicheru has been the Editor of the Star newspaper since its inception in July 2007. Previously, she worked with the Nation Newspaper where she started her journalism career and rose through the editorial ranks to become the first woman news editor of a mainstream newspaper in the region. She was also the first woman bureau chief for the newspaper at Mombasa and the first woman investigations editor in the region.

She was the first Kenyan woman to be awarded the Nieman Fellowship at Harvard as well as getting recognition from the International Women's Media Foundation who presented her with a Courage in Journalism Award.

Research Paper Title: 
The Challenges Facing Independent Newspapers in Sub-Saharan Africa

The aim of the research is to establish what these factors are and whether they can be replicated elsewhere in the continent
