Eduardo Suárez has been appointed as Head of Communications at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. He will report to Director Rasmus Nielsen and will be part of the Institute’s senior leadership team.

His role involves designing and executing a comprehensive communication strategy with a focus on serving the needs of the Institute’s most important stakeholders: the journalists, editors, media executives, and entrepreneurs who are shaping the future of journalism around the world. He will lead the Institute’s efforts at creating new spaces where journalists, academics, technologists and policymakers can learn from each other and come up with solutions for the challenges journalism faces today.

Eduardo is an accomplished senior journalist with experience in Europe and the United States. He started his career at the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, where he worked for 14 years as an opinion writer and a foreign correspondent from London, New York and Brussels. He covered the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign for Univision and has published three books on American politics. In 2014, he won the Gabriel García Márquez Journalism Award for a long-form story on the enduring impact of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

He is also the co-founder of two news startups: El Español and Politibot, has recently worked on digital strategy for the March Foundation, and has written on journalism and politics for El País, Letras Libres and Nieman Reports. He has spent the last six months as a journalist fellow at the Institute where he has conducted research on the rise of reader revenue models in European newspapers.

Responding to the appointment, Eduardo said: “I’m thrilled to join a global institution whose mission is so aligned with my values and with the work I’ve done throughout my career. The Institute’s excellent research and its leadership and fellowship programmes are especially important at a time when journalists and news organisations are under threat in so many countries. I look forward to working with my new colleagues in addressing the challenges and promise of journalism today.”

Rasmus Nielsen, Director of the Reuters Institute, said: “Eduardo’s combination of journalistic experience, entrepreneurial appetite, digital media expertise, intellectual curiosity, and international outlook is perfectly aligned with what we do at the Reuters Institute, and the whole team at the Institute is looking forward to working with him on making our work more visible, accessible, and engaging for journalists around the world.”

Eduardo Suárez will be taking up his post on September 1.
