Director of Research - Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism
The Department of Politics and International Relations at Oxford seeks to appoint an outstanding individual with a commitment to connecting practice and research globally and a significant reputation in research on journalism, news and the media to take on the role of Director of Research at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, based in Norham Gardens, Oxford.
The primary responsibility of the role is to open up new areas of research activity, lead the development of successful project proposals that connect practice and research and fall within the institute’s mission of exploring the future of journalism. The successful applicant will provide leadership in developing the Institute’s research strategy, identifying new areas of funding and building international partnerships. The post-holder will also engage in advanced study and research contributing to the publications of the Institute as lead- and co-author and will be a part of the leadership team of the Institute contributing to its strategic planning.
The successful candidate will have the intellectual vision and ambition to lead the current research team and launch a range of successful funding applications and research projects that will deliver on RISJ’s commitment to join together the worlds of journalism practice, media industry, policymaking, and research.
This is a full-time fixed term position for 3 years with the possibility of extension and a negotiable start date.

Head of Communications
Grade 8: £40,792 -£48,677 with a discretionary range to £53,174 p.a.
The Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR) is seeking to appoint a highly experienced communications/media relations professional to the role of Head of Communications at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ), based in Norham Gardens, Oxford.
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced communications/media relations professional to maximise the international impact of the Institute’s work across the worlds of journalism, research and media policy.
The Head of Communications will be expected to plan and implement appropriate measures to evaluate all aspects of the communications and outreach strategy, and to monitor and analyse the results. This key role will require strong leadership and creative vision for the development and delivery of a comprehensive external relations and media strategy for the Institute.
The successful candidate should hold a high general level of education, including degree qualifications or equivalent in-depth experience of successful communication to varied international groups. They will have excellent writing skills, interpersonal skills along with an ability to distil, digest, synthesise, interpret and communicate complex academic findings.
The postholder will have an interest in cutting-edge research across a wide range of important global issues and an understanding of the Reuters Institute’s scope and ambition. Excellent management skills are essential, alongside an ability to think strategically and to work in pressured environments. Professional qualification in marketing, PR or journalism (e.g. CIM or CIPR) are amongst desirable criteria.
