RISJ announcement – Director of Research

In January, Rasmus Kleis Nielsen will start work as Director of Research and Development at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. His role is to expand the institute’s internationally-oriented, practically-relevant academic research agenda and develop further ties to practicing journalists and media industry professionals around the world.Dr Nielsen is the author and editor of five books and a range of other academic publications on issues including the news business, journalism, media use, and political communication. Amongst them is “Ground Wars: Personalized Communication in Political Campaigns” (Princeton University Press, 2012), which won the 2014 Doris Graber Award given by the American Political Science Association for the best book published in political communication in the last ten years. Dr Nielsen is also taking over as editor of the International Journal of Press/Politics after Professor Silvio Waisbord and will bring the journal with him to the Reuters Institute when he assumes his post in January. He is trained as a political scientist and in media research, and has a PhD in communications from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. He brings a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective to the Reuters Institute’s research on the substantial challenges facing journalism and the news media today. His work has been covered by the BBC, the Economist, the Financial Times, the Guardian and many others and is widely recognized in both academic and industry circles. Dr Nielsen comes from a position as Associate Professor of Political Communication at Roskilde University in Denmark (from which he will be on leave) and has previously worked as a Research Fellow at the Reuters Institute.
