NGOs as Newsmakers

Nongovernmental organisations are turning to journalism, to produce and publish coverage of their own work. In some cases this is because international coverage by news organisations is waning, but often it is because it allows NGOs to communicate directly with the public, bypassing traditional gatekeepers.

But is this approach always effective? Author Matthew Powers, of the University of Washington, argues that while these efforts have changed and expanded traditional news practices and coverage, NGOs are still dependent upon traditional political and media elites.

NGOs as Newsmakers is the first in a new Reuters Institute Global Journalism Series.

It is available in bookshops and on Amazon.
