New Journalism Innovation Project

26 March 2018

Julie Posetti

Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University is announcing a new research initiative designed to support global journalism practice. The Journalism Innovation Project aims to identify and analyse examples of innovative best practices in digital, mobile, and social media journalism to generate new insights to help independent, professional news organisations develop more effective forms of storytelling aligned with an evolving media environment.

The purpose is to understand and foster innovation in journalism through independent research by identifying, analysing, and sharing best practice case studies from around the world. Initially a one-year pilot project, it will focus on new digital, mobile, and social forms of journalism, with an emphasis on editorial innovation in formats/genres across private sector and non-profit news media.

Julie Posetti, will join the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism as Senior Research Fellow in August 2018 to lead the project, working with RISJ Director of Research Rasmus Kleis Nielsen. Julie is a multi-award winning Australian journalist and academic who authored the major global UNESCO study Protecting Journalism Sources in the Digital Age (2017). She is also a former Research Fellow and Editor with the Paris-based World Association of News Publishers, where she led their flagship international industry report Trends in Newsrooms. Most recently, she was Head of Digital Editorial Capability for Fairfax Media, publisher of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

“I am very excited about leading this important and timely research project on global best practice in digital, mobile and social journalism for the Reuters Institute,” Posetti said. “I look forward to joining the excellent team at Oxford, and working with international news organisations on a project designed to help foster innovation - in an era where the future is clearly social and mobile, and where change is the only constant.”

The Journalism Innovation Project builds on the Reuters Institute's ongoing international research on evolving practices of journalism. The project is funded by a grant from Facebook, agreed in September 2017.
