Le Monde Executive and Economist Editor-in-Chief Appointed to Reuters Institute Advisory Board

Sylvie Kauffmann, editorial director of Le Monde and John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief of The Economist, have been appointed to the Reuters Institute Advisory Board.Kauffman began her career at Agence France-Presse and served as a correspondent in Paris, London, Warsaw and Moscow, before joining Le Monde as Moscow correspondent in 1988. She later served as Washington correspondent, New York bureau chief, South East Asia correspondent and deputy editor, and became the first woman ever appointed executive editor. She holds degrees from the faculty of law at Aix-en-Provence and at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques (Aix-en-Provence). She studied journalism at the Centre de Formation des Journalistes in Paris. John Micklethwait is the Editor-in-Chief of The Economist. After studying history at Magdalen College, Oxford, he worked as a banker before joining The Economist as a finance correspondent in 1987. Since then his roles at The Economist have included setting up the bureau in Los Angeles; being the newspaper's media correspondent; editing the business section; running the New York bureau; and editing the United States section. The Economist now has a circulation of around 1.6 million worldwide. Mr Micklethwait was named Editors' Editor of the Year at the British Society of Magazine Editors 2010 annual awards. He is a trustee of the British Museum. Advisory Board members provide advice and guidance to the Institute's research and development activities.
