Charitable and Trust Ownership of News Organisations

Magdalen College
This one-day symposium explored the benefits and challenges of charitable and trust ownership of news organisations amidst growing calls for establishment of more charitable and not-for-profit media. It aimed to examine the inner workings of these forms of ownership to gain a fuller perspective on the conditions under which they work best, unique challenges they encounter, and their sustainability in the face of difficult economic conditions.
Media & the Environment: Reporting Climate Change

This workshop and public panel discussion, organised by Oxford's Environmental Change Institute and Reuters Institute, examined national variations in the reporting of climate change science associated with a major international conference, namely the December 2009 COP15 in Copenhagen. Speakers at the public discussion included Richard Black from the BBC, David Adam from the Guardian, the FT’s Fiona Harvey, and Ben Jackson from the Sun.

Facing the Challenge of the Internet: Policy and Press responses in Britain and France

This one day conference was organised by the Reuters Institute with the support of Cultural Service of the French Embassy and the Maison Française d’Oxford.
In both Britain and France concern is growing about the future of newspapers. As increasing numbers of people access news online, newspaper circulation and advertising revenues have come under greater pressure. Many, both from within the industry and beyond, are worrying about how the traditional democratic functions of the press will be met if current trends continue.
This conference examined the policy and press responses to the new challenges. Analysts and policymakers from both countries compared the differing economic challenges, policy responses and policy styles in the two countries.
Public Service Broadcasting in Britain and France compared
21-22 November 2008
Maison Française d’Oxford
This conference brought together around 50 policy makers, practitioners and academics to examine recent changes in British and French Public Service Broadcasting. The specific focus was the comparison of France’s Copé Commission of 2008 and new draft broadcasting law with the BBC Charter Renewal and the current UK debate over the future of Public Service Broadcasting. The conference set out to understand the different policy issues in Britain and France and to identify the lessons to be learned.
